Alexandra and the surrounding villages and hamlets of Acheron, Molesworth and Yarck have a proud and rich history of gold and agriculture - still evident today in the many National Trust classified buildings, stately homesteads and grand hotels. A stone's throw from Lake Eildon and the Lake Eildon National Park, Alexandra and surrounds is a great location for outdoor enthusiasts, foodies and history buffs.

Explore the Alexandra Timber Tramway & Museum and ride on the old steam train

Located at the trailhead of the Great Victorian Rail Trail in Alexandra is the Alexandra Timber Tramway and Museum which offers a fascinating insight into the early history of railway and timber industry in the region. It is custodian to a number of historic former railway buildings including Alexandra Station, goods shed and a mechanical workshop.  It is also home to the Alexandra Market, held on the second Saturday of the month between September and May where steam and diesel train rides operate for the duration of the day.

Camp in one of the many national parks and state forests 

There are so many unique places to camp close by to Alexandra. Rubicon State Forest campgrounds - Kendalls, Tin Hut & The Boys line the banks of the Rubicon River and you can even bring your pets here too. For lakeside camping it doesn't get any better than Lake Eildon National Park campgrounds - Jerusalem Creek, Lakeside, Candlebark and Devil Cove. Cathedral Range State Park has some epic walks with camp grounds to rest up in afterwards including Cooks Mill, Neds Gully and The Farmyard. Be sure to check book in these spots early via the Parks Victoria website as they tend to get busy in the school holidays and long weekends.

Fish on the banks of the Goulburn River near Alexandra & Acheron

For fishing it doesn't get much better than the Goulburn River - one of Victoria's premier fishing locations for Murray Cod, Golden Perch, Trout, Redfin, Carp. Did you know? When gold was discovered in the 1860s, Alexandra was known as Red Gate, after the gate that separated two grazing stations that prospectors travelled through. In 1867, Red Gate was renamed Alexandra in honour of the Princess of Wales.
