Arts, Culture and History Trail
Arts, culture and history weave their way through Murrindindi Shire, creating a vibrant tapestry of storytelling for everyone to enjoy.
From contemporary art exhibitions and mural trails to historic walks through ancient forests and everything in between, there’s sure to be something to please even the most discerning travellers among us.
Murrindindi Shire sits proudly on Taungurung and Wurundjeri Country, with some of our townships and place names derived from traditional language. 20 scar trees scattered along the Great Victorian Rail Trail symbolise our relationship to the Warring (Goulburn River) and its associated rivers, creeks and Ngarrak (Mountains). The Daabani Biik Butganani Yanath sculpture trail at the Yea Wetlands deepens our knowledge and understanding of Taungurung culture.
Murrindindi, or ‘Dindi’ as the locals like to call it, has long been a magnet for artists seeking inspiration from the spectacular landscapes, mountains, rivers and forests. Painters, potters, sculptors and textile artists work from studios and workshops scattered throughout the villages and hamlets of the region. From internationally lauded artists to local creatives, the region offers a unique art encounter.
An array of museums, historical societies and heritage trails scattered throughout the region tell tales of our goldrush and timber history that will leave you fascinated and looking for more. Drop into one of our Visitor Information Centres that showcase a wide range of local artworks alongside suggestions on how best to explore the area.
Galleries and exhibitions can be found in many cafes, restaurants and stores which support and value the contribution local artists make to the community. What better way to admire these works and wares than over a glass of local wine and a plate of regional produce, or a piping hot tea or coffee best enjoyed with some old-fashioned scones with jam and cream.
A year-round events calendar means there's always plenty happening. And with so much to do, a weekend or multi-day getaway is a must, with plenty of accommodation options on offer to suit all tastes and budgets.
